Today’s audio diary is called Read Fiction.

I know that being in business, we always talk about reading business books, really good business books. And we have those in our Working Moms Only Success Club: books that I’m reading on business and how they help you.

But what I want to talk about today is how reading fiction actually helps your business. Pat Conroy, for example, is one of my favorite fiction writers who wrote The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini. He also wrote South of Broad, which is one of my favorite fiction books of all time.

When you read fiction, I mean written by really good authors, what happens is you improve your vocabulary. You actually improve the style of your writing, and you improve the engagement of your writing. And the other thing about fiction is that it takes you places, and it helps your imagination. So don’t think that it’s a waste of time or you’re just indulging yourself, and that you don’t have time for fiction because everything has to be about work.

And so again, it all turns to that blended lifestyle. So when you actually read fiction, it helps your business. But it also helps your imagination which helps your everyday life – whether you’re dealing with your kids, your employees, your husband or your best friends.

There are just so many reasons to read a great novel. So treat yourself, go out there and get a great one to read. I think I’ll actually put a couple of fiction books which have inspired me, in our Working Moms Success Club.
